Our Ukrainian Community - Cultural Programme

2010 has been a year for pursuing new cultural endeavours, and we have seen a variety of wonderful things evolve. This is just the beginning!
 
To celebrate these new musical/cultural activities, the Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. with assistance from Radio 4EB are in the process of producing a Music CD of songs performed in our Ukrainian Community Centre in 2010.
This music compilation will included performances by:

  • Our Ukrainian Classical singers,
  • Our Ukrainian Folkloric Ensemble "Teren"
  • Our Ukrainian Community Choir
  • Our Ukrainian Community singers and musicians who performed at the Qld Multicultural Festival at Roma Street Parklands, and   
  • Our contemporary Ukrainian singer "Yulija Rai"

The cover of the CD will be designed by local Ukrainian Artist Olga Lutsenko!
 
In 2010, a new group of young adults joined our Ukrainian Dance group "Kalyna" to learn to dance.
They then performed at the Qld Multicultural Festival at Roma Street Parklands in October, representing the Ukrainian community.
 
Our very own Ukrainian musicians Stephan & Marko Chomyn, Tomas Miljenovic and Lyudmila Kelloway performed Ukrainian music at our Malanka!
 
In 2011, we plan to build upon on the success achieved to date, and encourage more people to participate in different genres & styles of Ukrainian music.
 
Our aim is to increase the variety of acts performing at our community centre, and to also perform to the wider community at multicultural festivals, to promote our wonderful culture.
 
We have many talented people in our community, and there are many people out there that we want to encourage to take part in our different creative cultural activities.

Our focus is to involve more people from Ukraine in our community, as we welcome their involvement.
 

1. Ukrainian Community Choir
Since the formation of the Ukrainian Community in Brisbane, a group of people have always gathered together to sing and perform Ukrainian songs at our Community Centre.
We are very proud that this tradition still continues today.
 
Our Choir still performs at all our community concerts, including:

  • Ukrainian Independence day,
  • Taras Shevchenko Commemoration and 
  • Sviato Heroiw commemoration.

2. Ukrainian Classical Vocal & Music Group
In 2010, three ladies began working together to promote Ukrainian classical music.
 
Lyudmila Kelloway - Mezzo Soprano
Likarissa Brooker - Soprano
Iryna Penner - Piano
 
In a relatively short period of time this group has cemented itself as an integral part of our community cultural program.
We are very fortunate to have such talented ladies in our community who possess formal qualifications from Ukrainian Conservatoriums and Universities. 
 
They have performed at all our community concerts this year, and we are proud to have these talented people representing our community and promoting our Ukrainian Culture amongst the broader community. See articles & photos in our Recent Events section.

These ladies have encouraged others to participate in Ukrainian classical music performances, and so far we have seen the following people perform:

Tomas Miljenovic - Clarinet
 
3. Ukrainian Folkloric Ensemble "Teren"
In 2010, a group of people who all sing in the community choir, wanted to sing more and in Ukrainian Folk style.
So they began practicing, and it resulted in someting unique. Their signature song - "Svite Teren"

4. Ukrainian Dance group "Kalyna"

5. Ukrainian Radio 4EB - Broadcasts every Sunday from 1:45pm- 3:15pm on 98.1FM.
Listen to this program to hear Ukrainian news & music and to find out what is happening in our community.
Radio 4EB is Brisbane's only multilingual radio station. It's located at 140 Main Street, Kangaroo Point.  www.4eb.org.au
