The Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. condemns in the strongest possible terms the barbaric Russian strikes on a kindergarten in Kharkiv on 22 October 2025.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly fifty kindy children were evacuated as emergency workers battled flames and chaos. One adult was killed and several others were injured. Footage from the scene shows terrified children crying out for their mothers — a scene that no parent, anywhere in the world, should ever have to witness. Fortunately, the kindergarten teachers and rescuers were able to protect the children from serious physical harm.
“Russia is a terrorist state,” said Peter Bongiorni, President of the Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. “There is no other way to describe a regime that deliberately targets schools, hospitals and kindergartens. These are not military targets. These are children. This is barbaric, and it must be called what it is — an act of terrorism.”

Bongiorni added:
“Each new attack like this reminds us that the war in Ukraine is not a frozen or nearly resolved conflict. It is a daily assault on human decency itself. The world cannot turn away. Those who stand for human rights and decency must continue to support Ukraine until this aggression is stopped.”
The Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. stands in solidarity with the people of Kharkiv, with the families shattered by this horrific attack, and with all Ukrainians enduring Russia’s ongoing campaign of terror against civilians.
Each day we thank the brave defenders and rescuers of Ukraine, who put their lives at risk to protect Ukraine’s people, such as these kindy kids, every single day. Our prayers are with the people of Ukraine, and our hearts are heavy for the trauma these children will now have to carry.
Slava Ukraini.
