What is Malanka?

Malanka (Ukrainian New Year) is a Ukrainian holiday that celebrates the New Year according to the old Julian calendar on January 13th and 14th  (these days the calendar we all know and use is the Gregorian calendar). The holiday traditionally involved lots of food, drinks, parades, caroling and even good-natured pranks!

Malanka is full of magical, folkloric, and ancient ritual and dates back to Ukraine’s pre-Christian pagan days. On New Year’s Eve, good and evil spirits, according to Ukrainian forefathers, fell upon the earth. The night was spent dancing, eating ritualistic meals, fortune telling, casting spells, and singing carols of good wishes called Shchedrivky to fend off the evil spirits before the new year.

In Soviet Ukraine, Malanka was outlawed, though several villages disregarded the decree. Despite the ban in Ukraine during Soviet times, diaspora communities continued to commemorate Malanka, and to this day it is still a significant occasion in many diaspora communities. Now, in an Independent Ukraine, Western Ukraine is taking the lead in restoring the tradition of Malanka.

Today, whilst most don’t believe in the old myths or carry on with all of the ancient traditions, Malanka is a great way to ring in the New Year and to celebrate with great food, entertainment and good, old-fashioned Ukrainian hospitality.

Що таке Маланка?

Маланка (Український Новий рік) — це святкування Нового Року за старим Юліанським календарем 13 і 14 Січня. Свято традиційно передбачало багато їжі, напоїв, колядок і навіть добродушних витівок!

Маланка насичена магічною, фольклорною та давньою обрядовістю і бере свій початок ще з дохристиянських язичницьких часів України. У Новорічну ніч добрі і злі духи, за уявленнями українських пращурів, падали на землю. Вночі танцювали, їли обрядові страви, ворожили, чаклували та співали щедрівки, щоб відганяти нечисту силу перед Новим роком.

У Радянській Україні Маланка була заборонена, хоча кілька сіл нехтували цією забороною. Незважаючи на заборону в радянські часи, громади діаспори продовжували святкувати Маланку, і донині вона є значущою подією в багатьох громадах діаспори. Зараз, у Незалежній Україні, Західна Україна бере на себе лідерство у відновленні традиції Маланки.

Сьогодні, хоча більшість не вірить у старі міфи чи продовжує всі давні традиції, Маланка – це чудовий спосіб зустріти Новий рік і відсвяткувати його зі смачною їжею, розвагами та доброю, старомодною українською гостинністю.
